President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid glowing tribute to Kenya’s late opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a freedom fighter, patriot, and Pan-Africanist whose contribution to democracy and regional unity will be remembered for generations.

In a statement issued by State House, President Museveni said he received the news of Odinga’s passing with “deep sadness,” noting that his life and political journey reflected courage, resilience, and an unyielding commitment to the liberation and development of Africa.

“Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga was not just a career politician — he was a freedom fighter in the tradition of his late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Both stood firmly for the unity, progress, and independence of our continent,” Museveni said.

President Museveni recalled decades of cordial interaction with the Odinga family, emphasizing Raila’s consistent advocacy for democracy, social justice, and East African integration. He noted that their discussions over the years always revolved around strengthening regional cooperation and realizing the dream of a united East African Federation.

“He believed in an Africa that stands tall and speaks with one voice. His vision went beyond Kenya — it embraced the prosperity of the entire region,” Museveni added.

The Ugandan leader extended heartfelt condolences to President William Ruto, the government and people of Kenya, and to the Odinga family, praying that God comforts them during this difficult time.

Museveni further called on young Africans to learn from Odinga’s lifelong service to the people, saying Africa’s future depends on a new generation ready to continue the work started by its founding leaders.

“The passing of leaders like Raila Odinga leaves a great void. It is now upon Africa’s youth to fill that space — to stand for unity, integrity, and transformation,” he said.

Raila Odinga, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 80, was Kenya’s long-serving opposition leader and a key figure in the country’s democratic evolution. Across Africa, leaders have hailed him as a towering statesman whose courage shaped the continent’s modern political landscape.
